Can't it signify recognition for excellence? Besides, the Academy chose three other winners who (despite Plummer's old age) have never won before, so is that an indication the members are stuck on nostalgia? The choice of the Artist is predictable? A nearly silent black and white film in an industry where box office is dominated by 3D and megastars? And all this you attribute to the fact that most members are old, white and male? Where is the logic in that? Do you question the validity of the choices for the Nobel prizes because, presumably, that academy is dominated by old white males? Everyone is entitled to opinions but surely one must try to be balanced and reasonable. Your conclusion is both sweeping and illogical. But the most egregious point is your argument of Tron. Tron? What a shocking mistake by the academy.

GERARDO D.
Again, great write up, keep it up.

Re: Troubling Times for the University of California

UC campus chancellors must act to decrease the cost of higher education at University of California.

University of California Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau hijack’s all
our kids’ futures.

I love University of
California (UC) having been a student & lecturer. Like so many I am deeply
disappointed by the pervasive failures of Birgeneau from holding the line on
rising costs & tuition increases. On an all in cost, Birgeneau has molded Cal. into the most
expensive public university.

Paying more is not a
better education. Instate tuition consumes 14% of Calif. median family income! Faculty wages must reflect California's ability to pay, not what others
are paid.

Chancellor Birgeneau ($450,000
salary) dismissed many much needed cost-cutting options. He did not consider
freezing vacant faculty positions, increasing class size, requiring faculty to
teach more classes, doubling the time between sabbaticals, freezing pay &
benefits, reforming pensions & health benefits.

Birgeneau said such
faculty reforms “would not be healthy for Cal”. Exodus of faculty, administrators: who
can afford them?

We agree it is far
from the ideal situation. UC Berkeley cannot expect to do business as usual:
raising tuition; granting pay raises & huge bonuses during a weak economy
that has sapped state revenues & individual Californians’ income.

Birgeneau can bridge the trust
gap with alumni, donors, politicians, and the public with reassurances that salaries
& costs reflect California’s
ability to pay.

We must act. Chancellor
Birgeneau’s campus police deployed violent baton jabs on students protesting
increases in tuition. The sky above UC will not fall when Chancellor Birgeneau
($450,000 salary) is ousted.

Opinions? Email the UC Board
of Regents marsha.kelman@ucop.edu

Here's the context: BART platforms are NOT PUBLIC zones available for these kinds of gatherings. They are privately owned by BART, who have a responsibility to prevent protests on their platforms for a myriad of reasons including, but not limited to, crowds getting knocked over into trains, stampedes in a confined area, and let's not forget that electrified third rail. Anything that may potentially harm riders has to be prevented with the least amount of physical harm possible. Second, BART owns the repeaters that distribute cellular service in those tunnels. Not you. Not the phone company. It was only a few years ago that there wasn't any cellular service AT ALL in those tunnels, and for obvious reason: it's in a tunnel. BART put up the cash to provide the service to their riders, not to provide the means for some misguided group to harm their passengers. Finally, the other arguments: "What if there's an emergency? How can I call 911 without my cell?" Well, back in 2011, there was something called a "payphone," which handles 911 calls for free. Oh, and there are a LOT of payphones in those tunnels. Besides, who's going to be causing this emergency? Probably the protesters. "But isn't BART cutting our phone service kind of like going into our houses and ripping out the phone line?" It ain't your house. It's BART's house. Now, if someone came into my house and used my phone to coordinate my public flogging and inconvenience my guests, well... what would YOU do?

Re: So you think you’re a ‘90s child?

Although the indicated "correct" answer for the Gameboy question is false (the Nintendo DS was not released as part of the Gameboy line though it does boast backwards compatibility with Gameboy Advanced cartridges), there is actually a correct option for the Pokemon question as "Onyx" is an intentional misspelling of the Pokemon, Onix.

Re: So you think you’re a ‘90s child?

Frankly, I believe that you should have made the instructions more clear. The test has multiple questions where all of the answers are correct, simply not in the '90s timeframe. You should have specified. I got numbers two and nine incorrect because I was given no option for "none of the above" and the questions did not specify clearly that we were only allowed to choose the answer that didn't come from the 90s. In question two, all choices listed are Pokemon, but Magmortar was released in the second generation of Pokemon in the 21st century. In question nine, all are GameBoy models, but the DS was, again, the only one released in the 21st century. The questions did not ask to only include answers of 20th century choices, so in the future, please specify.
Thank you,
Concerned Student

Re: So you think you’re a ‘90s child?

Magmortar first appeared in fourth generation Pokemon games which were released in 2006.
